- Yarm's first steam fire engine was bought by the parish council from Stockton in 1914. Before that the town had had a hand-operated pump, kept in a wooden hut at the top of Bentley Wynd. A bell was rung in the Town Hall to call out the part-time firemen; the two horses which pulled the engine also had to be caught and put between the shafts of the "steamer," which remained in use until 1931 when, following the devastating fire at Hird's skin yard it was replaced by the motor engine — a Morris Commercial. The new motor-driven engine was supplied by Dobson's garage, in Yarm.
